Kennen’s Backstory

Like all the yordles, Kennen originally came from Bandle City. Realizing he did not fit with the other yordles, Kennen left the spiritual realm of Bandle City, searching for harmony and balance. He found himself drawn to Ionia.

In these first lands, Kennen witnessed many ancient wars and a land struggling to rebuild after. Kennen watched and became fascinated by how these people sought to balance themselves and their home.

The people in Ionia respected the yordles as creatures of the spirit realm and Kennen chose this place to be his home.

Kennen did not age like the mortals and studied them for centuries. He was always impressed by their diligent protection of the sacred balance between the mortal and spiritual realm.

There were many threats to the tranquility of Ionia. Kennen battled many disturbances alone throughout the years, enjoying the challenge. After a while, Kennen realized he was doing nothing about why these disturbances were occurring.

Discovering an Order that sought to keep this balance, Kennen observed the Order of the Kinkou. This order carefully observed any imbalances before doing what had to be done to restore it.Kennen in Ionia

The order of the Kinkou was led by an Eye of Twilight and a Fist of Shadow. The Eye and the Fist acted as a check and balance, but needed another party to make the leadership more balanced.

Approaching the order, Kennen proposed that he be The Heart of the Tempest. Being able to travel between the mortal realm and the spirit realm made Kennen perfect for this title and the Kinkou accepted.

Keeping the Kinkou in perfect harmony, The Eye, The Fist and The Heart all worked together.

Noticing a rift growing between the people and the order, Kennen realized he could fill another need for the Order. He could communicate the judgments of the Order to those people who were affected by the Order’s judgment.

The Kinkou removed themselves from other people by wearing masks. Kennen removed his mask while communicating with these people in order to connect with them.

To those who were a threat to the Kinkou, Kennen was swift at silencing them.

Of all the threats to the Order, none were more grave as the Noxian invasion. Kennen opposed joining the resistance, even at the threat of the Order becoming undone.

Frustrated by the lack of action, Zed led a coup. Kennen guided the order while Shen, the new Eye of Twilight struggled to lead. Urging Mayym, the Fist of Shadow, to make her daughter, Akali, her successor, Kennen could not stop Akali from leaving the Order. Being trained by Kennen, Akali was also frustrated by the Order’s lack of action.

Even though there is much chaos in Ionia right now, Kennen is fighting alongside Shen to keep the balance in the First Lands.

A story about Kennen

Kennen’s Abilities

This champion is best played in the Top Lane. Kennen is not too difficult to play at first but does require some practice.

Every champion in League of Legends has a passive and 4 abilities which are used by pressing “Q”, “W”, “E”, and “R” on a keyboard during game play. “R” is considered an ultimate ability and is usually the most powerful ability. Each ability has a cool down, which means you have to wait some time before you can cast it again.

Most champion’s abilities use mana, however, Kennen’s abilities are not constrained by mana. Each time he casts an ability he uses energy. When your energy bar is filled up, you will have to wait for your energy to deplete in order to cast again.

Passive – Mark Of The Storm. Every third attack with Kennen’s abilities will stun the target.Kennen - Slicing Maelstrom

Q – Thundering Shuriken. This ability is a skill shot. Kennen will throw a shuriken at a target. If the target is hit, it will deal damage and add a Mark of the Storm.

W – Electrical Surge. There is a passive with this ability. Kennen deals extra damage and a Mark of the Storm to his target every few attacks. When this ability is used, Kennen will damage and add another Mark of the Storm to any target that is marked.

E – Lightning Rush. Kennen turns into a lightning form, which enables him to pass through units and his movement speed is increased. Each unit hit will get a Mark of the Storm and he will his attack speed will be increased.

R – Slicing Maelstrom. This is Kennen’s ultimate ability. He will summon an electrical storm around himself that will strike nearby enemies.

How To Play Kennen

The secret to Kennen is playing around your passive. Stack up your abilities in order to stun and damage multiple targets.

When playing Kennen, take your Q first. Because you do not have to worry about mana, use your Q as much as you can do last hit and damage the enemy from a safe distance.

Take your W next and use when you can in order to put more stacks of your passive on the opponent. Anytime you land a stun, make sure you auto attack or use any ability to damage them while they are unable to move.

At level three, take your E. This is a great ability to get you out of dangerous situations or make aggressive plays. You can quickly pass through any targets, stacking your passive on them.

One good combo is to use your E to pass through many targets. Then use your W to damage and put another stack on these targets. Land a Q to stun the enemy. Use your W again when it comes up and auto attack to do even more damage.

Use your ultimate ability at level 6. It will damage the enemy and stack your passive up. You can stun and damage the enemy with a good ultimate.

Tips And Tricks

When you have your W, every 5th auto attack will apply a stack of your passive. Use this to your advantage.

You can use your E to move through many minions. Then use your W to deal damage to every target you passed through. Remember, each target you pass through gets a Mark of the Storm and your W only works on targets Marked by the Storm.

While using E you can also use items and spells, but you are not able to auto attack.

Stunning the enemy with your passive will also restore your energy.

If you need to get somewhere quickly, or make a quick escape, use your E. Your movement speed will be increased and you will be able to pass through units.

In team fights, use your E to get into a good position. Quickly use your R and your W to mark and stun as many targets as you can. Use your Q and any other ability as they become available.

  1. This is very interesting to read the background to the character Kennen, and how he became the Heart of the Tempest and working with the Order to keep balance and harmony. You describe very well how to play Kennen and have some great tips.

How long does it take to complete a level? You mention to use your ultimate ability at level 6. Can you use it before, and if not, why should you only use it then?

    • Great question!  During the game, you gain experience which allows your champion to level up.  At the beginning of the game, you start at level 1 and can only choose to unlock your Q, W, or E.  At level 2, you can choose another ability and on up to level 6.  Level 6 is when you can unlock your R, which is your ultimate ability.  After level 6, you keep leveling up, but all of your abilities are unlocked.  So now when you level up, you can choose to make an ability stronger.

Hope that makes sense!  If not, you can always check out this post on how to play League of Legends for those who have not played before!
