Draven’s Backstory

Draven was an orphan boy who grew up in the streets of Basilich in Noxus with his older brother Darius. Draven would get into fights a lot and if it wasn’t for Darius, he probably would not have survived living on the streets. Darius often finished the fights Draven started.

Basilich fell to the warhosts of Noxus and the boys were found by a captain named Cyrus. Cyrus was impressed by the boys’ fighting spirits and took them to join the Noxian ranks.

For several years, the brothers fought side by side. Darius took to this life, but Draven became bored with it. He was a fighter with much skill, but felt like he did not receive enough personal glory and recognition. After all, it’s all about Draven.

Draven’s brother, Darius, eventually earned his own warband to command and Draven joined his band.

Again, Draven was not happy with how little recognition he received and soon left Darius’s command, signing a contract to fight in the Reckoning pits.Draven Spining Axes

Gladiators had fought in the Reckoning pits for centuries, earning riches and fame. This enticed Draven and he soon became a crowd favorite. The tide of war, however, turned people away from the Reckoning pits, and Draven fell into a slump.

The former general Jericho Swain found Draven washed-up and broke.

Swain needed Draven to help with his plan to reclaim Noxus’ lost glory. Swain wanted to dethrone the Grand General Boram Darkwill.

Draven was successful in helping Swain overthrow Darkwill, and basked in the glory

Darkwill’s supporters rose in defiance and Draven went to work. These supporters were sent to the arena where Draven executed each one with his spinning axes, much to the joy of the audience. Each execution became quite the spectacle.

Because of this, Draven became known as the Glorious Executioner.

Soon, Draven was approached by a promoter who wanted to turn the arena into a form of entertainment, rather than just an execution pit. Draven loved this idea and each fight ended less and less in death.

For a time, Draven lived the high life, quickly becoming famous and revered. Sometimes he would even march with Darius, defeating enemy champions and generals.

Even so, Draven started to grow restless again and now desires that the whole world know his name.

Draven’s Abilities

Draven is a champion that is usually played in the Bot Lane as ADC. This champion is difficult to master and requires lots of practice.

Every champion in League of Legends has a passive and 4 abilities which are used by pressing “Q”, “W”, “E”, and “R” on a keyboard during game play. “R” is considered an ultimate ability and is usually the most powerful ability. Each ability has a cool down, which means you have to wait some time before you can cast it again.

Draven’s abilities use mana. So you will have to watch your mana bar during the game. If your mana runs out, you will not be able to cast spells until it fills up.

Passive – League of Draven. Catching a Spinning Axe, killing a minion monster or tower grants Draven a stack of Adoration. Killing an enemy champion gives Draven bonus gold based on how much Adoration stacks he has at the time of the take down.

Q – Spinning Axe. This ability is one of the hardest abilities in the game to master. When used, Draven will start spinning an axe. This will make his next auto attack throw the axe at a target, dealing bonus physical damage. The axe will ricochet off the target and if Draven catches it he will ready another Spinning Axe to use.Draven Abilities

If you drop the axe, he will not spin it until you use this ability again. Draven can have two Spinning Axes at once. Each time you catch a spinning axe Draven gains a stack of Adoration.

W – Blood Rush. Draven will gain increased Movement Speed and Attack Speed when you use this ability. The cool down will be refreshed if Draven catches an axe.

E – Stand Aside. This ability is a skill shot. Draven will throw his axes which will deal physical damage to enemy targets and will knock them aside. The enemy targets are also slowed on hit.

R – Whirling Death. Draven’s ultimate is a global ability. When used, Draven will hurl two massive axes which will deal physical damage to each enemy hit. The damage decreases for each enemy hit and resets when the axes reverse direction.

These axes will travel in a straight line until they hit an edge of the map or if you send it back by hitting R while they are out. On their way back, they will curve in order to get back to wherever Draven is, making it the ultimate skill shot ability.

How To Play Draven

Draven is a champion that can carry hard come late game. His abilities may seem relatively simple, but he is pretty tough to master. I recommend learning other champions before trying to learn Draven.

The key to Draven is catching as many axes as you can while last hitting minions. You get a stack of Adoration each time you catch an axe and each time you last hit a minion with the axe. These stacks can accumulate quickly if you do this.

Start with Q in lane and start catching axes. The more you catch, the more stacks you get, the more gold you get when you take down an enemy champion.

Get your W next in order to increase your movement speed and attack speed as needed.

When you have your E you will be able to displace the enemy and slow them down. Use this to engage the enemy or to stop them from advancing on you.

Use your R to finish the enemy off or snipe enemies with low HP from far away.

How To Play Draven

Tips And Tricks

Use your spinning axes as much as possible and focus on catching them. The more you catch, the more stacks you get. When you have a lot of stacks, try to take an enemy down in order to cash in your stacks for cash.

Have your W ready when you need to move faster. It is important to note that this ability is like ghost. You will ignore minions when you use this ability.

E is great at disrupting the enemy. Use it to knock champions aside or disrupt abilities.

Your R is a long range ability and can be very effective at taking out low champions. Predict their movements and send it out to snipe enemies from afar.

Draven and Darius Interaction

Because Draven and Darius are brothers, there is an interaction between the two in League of Legends. I think Swain also interacts with the two.

Get them close to together in game and see what they say to each other!

  1. I have so many friends and family asking me to play League of Legends for months now! With the recent lockdown, more and more people are turning to games to ease their stress from work and economy. I never really knew what was the game about, until i read your article about Learning to Play League of Legends – The Basics and then How To Play Draven. I love characters with backstories, and you have given me such a great in-depth of Draven here! Through the awesome video, he looks like a strong character with his Whirling Death power being his ultimate ability!

I have interest in playing this game as I love team games and it is free! Though I have a lot of work at hand too. Will this game take up a lot of our time? And is Draven a character that needs to be unlocked? (Sorry if I ask so many questions, I really want to know more!) Thank you for this awesome article and looking forward to see more!

    • I am glad you liked my article!  Draven is a tough champion to learn when first starting out.  I would recommend learning an easier champion first, like Annie or Ashe.  There is a lot to learn and starting with simple champions will help you focus on how the game works better.

When you first start out, the game gives you a list of 15 champions that are unlocked for you to play.  This list rotates every couple weeks.  If you want to play a champion that is not unlocked you will have to either wait until they are free in the rotation, spend money to unlock it, or use Blue Essence if you have enough.

You can earn Blue Essence for free when you play the game, and then spend it on unlocking champions.  I have not spent a penny on unlocking champions and I currently have them all unlocked.

As far as how much time it takes is entirely up to you.  If you are just playing for fun, one game here or there is fine.  Each game lasts around the 45 minute mark.  If you want to get really good and climb the ranked ladder, then you will have to spend a lot of time playing.

Again thanks for the comment and the questions!
